PMI SWVA Chapter Meeting: Building a PMO - Where to start?

Business Acumen

Building a PMO: Where to Start? Scott Pritchard shares the real-world journey of growing a project management function from a single project consultant into a formal Project Management Office (PMO). Through practical stories and actionable lessons, attendees will learn how to recognize organizational pain points, introduce project management practices without overwhelming teams, build credibility through early wins, develop the right people and capabilities, and evolve toward portfolio management and a sustainable PMO. Rather than focusing on theory or bureaucracy, this session emphasizes incremental progress, trust, and solving real business problems. Whether you're launching a new PMO, working as a solo project manager, or looking to strengthen project management within your organization, you'll leave with practical ideas and a clear roadmap for taking the next step.

Speaker

Scott Pritchard is a certified project manager and the operations manager of the Carilion Clinic Family and Community Medicine Special Projects Team.  His work focuses on muti-disciplinary teams, portfolio management, and continually improving the project management process.  He holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering and a Master of Business Administration as well as Project Management Professional and Six Sigma Black Belt certifications.  He also maintains clinical certification as a Nationally Registered Paramedic.

Focusing on the intersection of project management, information technology, and healthcare, Scott leverages his expertise in multiple disciplines to both bridge the gap between team members and to act as a subject matter expert in select areas.  He also has a lifelong passion for education.  Most recently, he launched a monthly meetup for embedded project management staff in Carilion Clinic offering PDU-eligible training, networking, and sharing of best practices.  This is helping those working outside of traditional project management teams learn from each other and improve their effectiveness, ultimately empowering them to better serve our community’s healthcare needs.

Scott lives in Roanoke with his wife and two children.  He enjoys hiking, cycling, and constantly learning more about everything from economics, science, and personal finance to psychology, history, religion, and culture.
